(MONROVIA) October 4, 2010- The Consular Section of the United States Embassy in Monrovia, Liberia announces the beginning of the 2012 Diversity Visa (DV) lottery. Applications for the lottery will be taken for a one-month period exclusively online at http://www.dvlottery.state.gov. Registration will begin at 4:00PM local time on Tuesday, October 5th and conclude at 4:00PM local time on Wednesday, November 3, 2010. No entries will be accepted after this time.
To be eligible for the Diversity Visa, entries must include the names, dates of birth and photographs of the applicant and ALL eligible family members. Eligible family members include: spouses from government recognized marriages, born children under the age of 21 and legally adopted children under the age of 21, even if they do not live with the applicant. Entries that include additional individuals and those that do not include all eligible family members will be automatically disqualified. New this year, photographs must be scanned at a resolution of at least 300 dots per square inch (dpi), rather than the 150 dpi previously accepted.
Additionally, to qualify for a diversity visa, applicants must be at least 18 years of age and meet the minimum educational or job requirements of the program. For Liberians, this means a high school diploma and successful passage of the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) exam or a minimum of two years job experience in a highly specialized occupation as defined by the United States Department of Labor. Many common jobs in Liberia, such as beautician, driver, mason, carpenter and chef, do not qualify under this definition.
As in the past, applicants may submit their own entries or have someone else submit an entry on his or her behalf. However, only one entry per person will be accepted. If multiple entries for the same individual are submitted, all entries will be cancelled. Each DV applicant should be aware that he or she is responsible for their own entry regardless of who submits the electronic forms. Applicants will be held solely responsible for errors, additions and omissions on the entry form. Submission of the wrong names, dates of birth and photos will make an applicant ineligible for a diversity visa. Omission of an eligible family member or the addition of someone who is not an eligible family member will make an applicant ineligible for a diversity visa. By submitting an entry for the 2012 Diversity Visa lottery, applicants agree to these rules.
This year, for the first time, successful DV lottery winners will be notified exclusively online. No paper notifications will be mailed. Results of the lottery will be available at http://www.dvlottery.state.gov beginning May 1, 2011. Applicants will access these results by entering the confirmation information provided at the time of initial entry. Because of this, applicants should keep a copy of their entry confirmation. Successful applicants will be notified of their appointment times through the same method.
Embassy Monrovia wishes all perspective applicants the best of luck in the 2012 Diversity Visa Lottery.
