A Critique Of Government Devil Advocacy Played In Addressing The Plight Of The Citizens And The Way Forward
May 7, 2008
T. Maxwell Grigsby, II.
06850858

In time like these where our perceived best friends are those that hate us the most, we should be very meticulous in embracing their delicate services rendered us in their quest to befriend or seek favor from us.

Living a life in Liberia today has become more difficult and frustrating than past regimes that were seen as despotic, brutal and tyrannical amidst the presence of our international partners who had been here for the past sixty months (5 years) to help us achieve peace, a reformed security sector, transparency and accountability in our financial and other sectors of government.

It pleases me to critically analyze major undertakings of this government that has been calendarized as achievements in confronting impediments that deprived the citizens good standards of living, and subject them to abject poverty.

Some Good News from Liberia
May 3, 2008
Nvasekie N. Konneh
Most of the time when we talk to friends and relatives in Liberia, they tell us all the terrible tales of hardship in the country. So much so we (those of us in the Diaspora) are convinced that nothing good is happening in the country. Because of all the negative news we hear all the times, some of us have given up hope of better days coming for Liberia. Fact is that if hope is dead in all of us, our country will be like a ship that has run aground and no one to pull it off.

LIBERIA: Effects of Growing Rice Shortage on the World Market
Apr 21, 2008
Francis W. Nyepon
A rice shortage on the Liberian market is very likely as rice producing nations cut export of the commodity due to spikes in global demand and poor harvests. Global rice stocks are at their lowest level since 1976, and foreign sales restrictions by many producing-nations have removed about a third of the rice traded in the international market out of reach of poor and medium income countries. For example, in Liberia where rice is now available at a premium, consumers are likely to see an even higher price over the next few months for the 100 lbs bag of parboiled long-grain rice. However, due to the current global economic movement on rice sales, and soaring price to an all-time high shortage of rice on the Liberia market will soon become evident to local rice dealers and consumers.

Children everywhere are termed as future leaders. And for this reason, every family strives to give their children the best foundation to grow up and become respectful and productive people. It is because of the importance of children in succeeding their parents as heirs apparent that religions emphasize moral training for children with care. The Qur’an warns parents who don’t take good care of children, and also advises for good training for children. The Bible also gives parents a good recommendation to train up their children in the way they should go, and when they are old they will not depart from it.

Why everything including food costs more in Liberia?
Apr 13, 2008
Amara Konneh
Cambridge, MA - In the past week alone, I have received several emails and phone calls from friends and relatives in Liberia complaining about the rising commodity prices on the local market.

If Liberians are seeing the prices of food go up, they're not alone. Rising commodity prices is a worldwide crisis. The world economy is starting to sputter - financial markets around the world are tumbling and food prices have shot up so far, so fast that they have become news headlines in most newspapers and television news headlines.

From subsistence farmers eating rice in Ecuador to gourmets feasting on escargot in France, consumers worldwide face rising food prices in what analysts call a perfect storm of conditions. Freak weather is a factor. But so are dramatic changes in the global economy, including higher oil prices, lower food reserves and growing consumer demand in China and India, two of the world’s most populous nations.

Liberia: Simple Lesson From The GSM Market
Apr 13, 2008
Ibrahim Al-bakri Nyei
05694498
The ongoing marketing competition between the GSM companies in Liberia is a clear indication that a market of competition reduces prices and produce quality services to customers. In this market, the consumers sit and witness the race between the competitors. Their role now becomes getting services for little or nothing and sometimes on silver platters. And the role of the service providers reduced from maximizing profits to customer’s search, at which time the customers receive much olive branches. This may not be the first of its kind in Liberia, but this is sufficient enough for everyone to understand the significance of competition in a market.

Obama, a message to Africa

It is tense, hot, and educative, the US democratic presidential race. It is also a historic event in American politics. The likelihood of Americans seeing the first female or African-American president is growing. And this the general view of most people.

But for me, I want to look at this historic event from a different perspective, from an African perspective or dimension. This emerged from an informal political discussion I had with my room-mate, Mohamed, a Bio-medical engineer student at BCIT. At the end of our discussion I became very curious and this prompted me to ask him a few questions: what do you make of this campaign in the USA?
